Principal Fire Engineer (Built Environment)

  • The opportunity to have a variety of complex fire safety problems to solve and troubleshooting issues to support clients for challenging assignments and to learn and grow
  • Opportunities to support customer facing teams with high profile client issues and strategies including negotiating with enforcement authorities and preparing clients with the new safety regime
  • Supporting the Head of Fire in setting direction on fire safety standards in consulting as well as, supporting the development of fire safety products and solutions
  • Undertaking retrospective fire strategies, and complex and high-rise fire risk assessments in Type 1,2,3,4 in residential and/or commercial buildings
  • Undertaking reviews of complex surveys of compartmentation and fire stopping, and making recommendations
  • Developing mentoring and training requirements to meet the competency framework
  • Designing fire safety management systems across client portfolios
  • Developing skills and competencies across consultants
  • Acting as an internal source of expertise for the consultants
  • Developing solutions to interim measures and gap closing in developments
  • Supporting our clients with their safety cases
  • Implementing fire safety advice and site management systems, audits and reviews
  • Designing fire management plans and fire safety strategies for existing buildings
  • Creating fire safety solutions across a range of sites (varying in complexity) within the built environment
  • Working with colleagues across Ark to contribute to new projects and developments – we have an open culture and are always looking to share and expand on our knowledge!


  • Experience working as a Fire Safety Consultant/Engineer
  • Extensive experience in undertaking fire specialist work e.g. fire strategies, compartmentation surveys, fire management plans, complex fire risk assessments and type 4
  • Strong interpersonal skills and excellent report writing abilities to deliver client reports in accordance with a forensic and pragmatic approach
  • Comprehensive understanding of current UK regulations
  • Qualifications in fire safety and memberships with recognised fire safety bodies are essential e.g. MIFSM, MIFireE, MIFE, AIFE and Fire Safety Diploma Level 5 
  • Are you on one of the Fire Risk Assessment’s competencies registers? TFRAR or equivalent
  • Fire safety degree or equivalent in education
  • At least two years’ experience in residential property completing complex fire risk assessments and fire strategies
  • Working knowledge of relevant building regulations, BS9991, BS9999, BS9997, PAS 9980.
  • Advise and implement the technical requirements of quality management systems including BAFE SP205
  • Dedicated to CPD


We are offering a competitive package from £80,000 pa (subject to location, skills, experience and track record). For this role you would be considered an expert in fire safety and strategy.

The majority of our work around London. This role also has a national remit and you will be required to travel outside of London from time to time, so you must have the flexibility and willingness to travel as required.
