New Approved Health & Safety Law Poster

Update and FAQs

The HSE website has issued more details of its new H&S Law Poster, which will be available from the 6th April 2009.

Why do we think they are they changing the old format?

The existing poster has had its day. The block type face and the layout were unlikely to attract anyone to it (apart from consultants and enforcers of course).
Some of the detail required updating and we have all got used to the new logo. The new poster uses numbered lists of basic points; who should do what in regards to the law and how to go forward with problems.

“Do I have to have the poster”?

The HSE gives the following advice “Employers have a legal duty under the Health and Safety Information for Employees Regulations (HSIER) to display the poster in a prominent position in each workplace or provide each worker with a copy of the equivalent leaflet outlining British health and safety law”
So, you really have no choice and we think that in general it is easier to put up the poster rather than try to communicate it individually. Although, in the ideal world you should do both.

“But I want to make sure all my staff gets a copy of the details”

You can purchase pocket size cards for about Ł5 per 25, so the choice is yours

“But I still have a stock of the old posters and leaflets. Are they invalid?”

The HSE says that only the new style will be sold from April 2009. We, at Ark, are not aware of any reason for you not to use up your old stock of leaflets and posters until then.
However, we would suggest that you start to think about replacing them as soon as you have the budget to show that you are keen on continual improvement.

“What do I need to do”?

  • If you are needing to replace your existing poster, for whatever reason, make sure you get the new version
  • If your existing posters are still in good condition then you have a few years to replace it. The HSE area aware of the cost, particularly if you have numerous notice boards and premises, and are giving until April 2014 to completely replace all posters.
  • Think about the best way to communicate the change to your staff - for instance through safety meetings, electronic bulletin boards, along with wage slips, etc.
